This week, I’m getting into the weeds and sharing some vulnerability about the ins and outs of running my business. If you’re already wondering what the heck that has to do with you, stick with the story to the end—I promise there’s something in it that you’ll find relatable.
To give you a bit of background, I started my coaching practice in 2022. After more than two years in business, when I’m feeling objective, I recognize that I’ve achieved A LOT. But I’m not always objective and I’m thankful that my husband is great at reminding me of how far I’ve come.
Despite his support, being an entrepreneur can sometimes feel lonely.
You can’t really bounce ideas off your friends or family members because they have no idea what you’re talking about or how to provide strategic advice.
And while my husband is also an entrepreneur, our business models are apples and oranges. We’re both focused on helping people improve their health but what we do is very different—he helps people with one hour of their day and I help people with the other 23 hours. He’s excellent at supporting me, but he can’t always help me in the way I need.
A couple of months ago, I had one of those weeks where the thought that “nothing is working” started to repeat itself inside my head. I let it spin around and around until it grew to tropical storm strength.
I’d been putting in all the effort and none of my strategies were resulting in the outcomes I expected. It was like doing all the work on the nutrition and exercise front, only to hop on the scale and be smacked in the face with a higher number. I was frustrated, deflated, and demoralized. I wanted to give it all up, delete my website, quit my weekly emails, and sever ties with social media.
And so, after this particularly heavy week, I realized I NEEDED support—I didn’t want to struggle on my own anymore. After toying with the idea for months and months (and literally months), I was finally ready to join the business coaching program that I’d been quietly considering.
To break out of my funk, I knew I needed to feel connected to someone who understood my exact challenges, who had been there before, who could help me be strategic, and whose experience would make the way forward simple and achievable. I had big goals and I was tired of feeling blocked and overwhelmed at every turn.
Sure, I could probably find all the antidotes to my uncertainty by listening to podcast upon podcast, combing social media for solutions, and googling my way cross-eyed. But then I’d also have to sift through it all, figure out what would actually work, adapt it to my unique business, separate the BS and fads from fact, and then craft my own plan and rely 100% on my own motivation and willpower during the tough periods like the one I was currently stuck in.
Do these feelings and challenges feel familiar to you at all? Does my entrepreneurial journey somewhat mirror your nutrition journey?
Perhaps, like me, you feel a bit lonely, lost, and overwhelmed because you don’t have a clear path to follow to reach your health or body goals. You might feel like you’ve been struggling silently with what to do just like I was. Your mind might be constantly spinning with tropical storm sized intensity over questions like:
Should I eat more or less?
How much protein do I actually need?
Should I cut carbs? Or fat? Or both?
Am I working out too much or not enough?
You might be googling solutions or gathering a pile of social media influencers’ hot-tips on what to do to get your dream body or to have more energy. Unfortunately, it’s not helping at all because it’s all conflicting!
You might want to seek advice from your friends about what they’re doing to have SO much energy and look so good, but you don’t ask because their circumstances aren’t your circumstances. You might have three kids and you’re struggling to get food on the table that everyone will eat, whereas your friend has all the time in their schedule to workout and do food prep.
Maybe you want to talk to your husband or partner about what you should eat, but they’ll just say “you look great” or just eat what I eat…and you know that your metabolisms and food needs are as different as apples and oranges.
Maybe you’ve paid a bit here and there for cheap apps or online group coaching, but you’re still feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. And just like me, you know in your heart that you need a real person in order to feel connected and accountable.
I can tell you that when I signed onto the business coaching program, my mind suddenly felt at ease. I was calm. I now had a simple, clear and proven plan that would move me in the direction of my goals much faster than if I continued to go it alone. The self-doubt melted away and was replaced with optimism and excitement. My inner dialogue shifted from “nothing is working” to “I CAN do this”!
And the truth is, it worked. Within a few short months, I flipped my stats on their head. I booked presentations, increased my client load, and discovered a new stream for my business that I’d never thought possible (more details on that in the coming months).
This is the power of coaching! I like to think about it like this:
Achieving your goals is the equivalent of climbing to the top of a steep mountain. To go it alone, you have to do all the research to figure out how to get to the top, from what supplies and equipment you need, to the path you’ll take.
After months of research, preparation, and planning, you set out and think you’re following the map to a tee, but you hit a dead end. Back to the beginning for you.
You set out again, but this time, there’s a storm and you get knocked off a cliff. Back to the beginning again. And again. And again. Until you’re so exhausted by your perceived failures that you just can’t will yourself to start one more time.
And so you give up.
That’s the equivalent of working towards your nutrition goals without a coach. When you work with me, I do all the research, I get all the supplies, I help you carry your bags and navigate the most efficient way up that mountain. I’ve been there before, I’ve led numerous people to the top, I know the path and the pitfalls, the roadblocks, and the obstacles. I warn you before they derail you. I help you choose a kinder, more efficient, and effective path to success.
And most importantly I know, without a doubt, that you’re capable of incredible things.
